Every one has heard of ChristopherColumbus, and most people know the name of Vascoda Gama; but not so many, perhaps, realise thesprings of action that led these sailors to make theirgreat voyages, and some may be surprised to hear thatthe search for the road to the Indies was a move inthe great struggle between the Cross and the Crescent,and Bartholomew Diaz and Vasco da Gama were justas much Crusaders as Richard Cceur de Lion. In the middle of the fifteenth century Portugalwas engaged in a truceless war with the Moors ofNorth Africa. In this, the little country was onlytaking a part in the general war between Christiansand Mahomedans that was waged all along the Medi-terranean from east to west. Spain also took part init, and so did Genoa and Venice, and the Knights
