Thename Kinderhook was evidently given in the first instanceto a locality about sixteen miles below Albany, asstated in the journal of the Labadist fathers hereafternoted. By a law of 1660 it was required that for their mutualprotection the settlers of new districts should group theirdwellings in villages, under the penalty of forfeiture of theirholdings.
