The onlycure is by extirpation; but, as,formerly explained {Principles, 3d Am. Fi. Fungus Ha?matodes of Mamma; fungoid, bleeding, and blood-like. Ed. p. 317), it is only a small number of the many cases which presentthemselves to the surgeon, which warrant operation ; and it may bewell to repeat here, that if the skin be much involved, if the nipple bemuch retracted, if there be a marked depression over the tumor, if theopen condition be arrived at, if there be adhesion of the tumor to thepectoral muscle or to the ribs, if there be ominous signs of some ob-scure yet serious disorder proceeding within, and if there be glandularaffection without—these, being all singly most unfavorable, and betoken-ing relapse, do most certainly, when coming together, oontraindicateall operative interference. Extirpation of the Mamma. The patient having been placed recumbent, and duly arm on the affected side is raised and held by an assistant, so as tostretch the pectoralis major, and facilitate incision.
