The new men were gradually becomingaccustomed to army life, though some of them were kept under close guard,fearing that they might be tempted to desert. This was a necessity and, asa comrade pointed out, a proof of the superiority of volunteers overconscripted men or substitutes. Two drivers were seriously hurt onSunday, February 5th, and Comrade Hotchkiss was firmly of the opinionthat it was a punishment for working on Sunday, though other comradesthought the punishment should have fallen on those who had ordered themen to work, and not on the innocent, who had only done their V:^^K5- [From war sketch by E.
