On the anatomy of vertebrates [electronic resource] . lumbar neural spines are muchlonger than those of the cervical, and are subequal: they slightlyconverge to that of the twelfth dorsal, which is vertical, indicatinga greater extent of inflection of the trunk than in the SouthAmerican Anteater; increased freedom of motion is likewisefavoured by the less complex character and mode of union of thevertebrae. An accessory tubercle is developed upon the diapo-physis of the seven anterior dorsal vertebrae, which divides nearthe eighth into metapophysis and anapophysis. These progres-sively increase and diverge from one another in the succeedingdorsals, and in the first lumbar vertebra the metapophysis pro-jects upward, outward, and forward upon the outside of theanterior zygapophysis ; whilst the anapophysis extends backwardfrom the back part of the diapophysis, which it equals in anapophysis decreases in size in the following lumbar verte-brae and disappears in the last; the metapophysis also decreases 396 ANATOMY OF in size, but is continued throughout the lumbar series and alongpart of the sacral. The sacral spines coalesce, leaving interven-ing foramina, fig. 262, a : the transverse processes of the three anterior sacrals ioin the ilia, 262 ■> c, g; those of the threeposterior ones coalesce toform a broad depressed plate, with the posterior anglesproduced, ib. b, but not join-ing the ischia. These havea long and broad tuber ischii,ib. k, I. The pubis, d, is Pelvis of Orycteropus. 3 1 long and slender: the pec-tineal spine, ib. h, is long; the symphysis pubis is short; thelumbo-iliac angle is 140°. Metapophyses are developed fromthe outside of the anterior zygapophyses, as far as these extendalong the caudal series, viz. to the eighth vertebra ; beyond thesethe metapophyses are developed, independently of the zygapophy-ses, to near the termination of the tail. The haemal arches com-mence below the interspace between the second and thir
