Das Teatro Massimo in Palermo ist Italiens groesstes und Europas drittgroesstes Opernhaus. Es bietet etwa 3200 Sitzplaetze. Die Oper wurde im Stil des Historismus auf der Piazza Verdi erbaut. Architekt war Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile, der 1875 mit den Bauarbeiten begann. Nach seinem Tod wurde der Bau 1897 von seinem Sohn Ernesto Basile fertiggestellt. Nach einer Schliessung 1974 auf Grund baulicher Maengel blieb das Teatro Massimo wegen korrupter, mafioser Baupolitik über 20 Jahre lang geschlossen. Erst 1997 wurde es zu seinem hundertjaehrigen Bestehen mit Verdis Oper Nabucco wiedereroeffnet, Palermo, Sizilien, Italien, Europa | The Teatro Massimo in Palermo is Italy's largest and Europe's third largest opera house. After his death, the building was completed in 1897 by his son Ernesto Basile. The Opera closed in 1974 due to construction defects. The Teatro Massimo was closed for more than 20 years, because of corrupt, mafia-building policy. In 1997 it was reopened with Verdi's opera Nabucco, Palermo, Sicily, Italy, Europe
