Wet autumn afternoon view people walking through granite portal white brick vault Inscope Archway, Central Park South, New York
Inscope Archway, at the south=east corner of Central Park, was built in the 1870s in response to traffic problems on the East Drive Carriageway above. Horse back riders and carriageway drivers complained of the number of pedestrians crossing from Central Park Zoo. Ornamental pink granite surrounds grey granite bordering the haalf-oval opening of the archway, which is 34 feet in length, 12 feet high in the middle and 13 feet 7 inches wide at the base. The barrel vault is lined with bricks, which were originally sheathed in wood. The structure was built on swampy ground at a cost of $50,000. In the 1973 Central Park Master Plan for the restoration of the South East area of Central Park the masonry pointing was repaired, the stone-work cleaned, the brick-vault archway painted reflective-white and the lights inside the archway repaired. The original wood sheathing was not replaced due to problems of vandalism. Here, on a wet autumn afternoon, we see the archway sheltering a music-man playing a pipe for donations of money from passers-by. Autumn colours are seen in the background, leading towards the Wollman Ice Rink.
