View SE of the Victorian lower mine shaft headframe in Penrhyn slate quarry, Bethesda, Wales, UK: a cast iron balance shaft with wheelhousing. The quarries reached peak production in 1862, achieving a record output of 130,000 tons of slates. A complex of stepped galleries & waste tips now worked using modern methods (open terracing etc.) by Alfred McAlpine Slate Products Ltd. Zip World run several zip lines over part of the quarry. Penrhyn Slate Quarry, Ogwen Valley, is part of The Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales which became the UK's 32nd UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 July 2021.
