History of Wayne, Pike and Monroe counties, Pennsylvania . d on the 18th ofMarch, 1790, when the sheriff was about to ac-knowledge in open court the deed to Smith,Joseph Thomas, Wilsons attorney, arose andasked for a rule to show cause why, upon JamesWilsons paying to the representatives of Ham-iltons estate his contributory part of ColonelSeelys debt to said Hamilton, a deed should notbe made by the sheriff to the said Wilson, asthe best and highest bidder. The court ruledthat Mr. Thomas take nothing by his motion, 338 WAYNE, PIKE AND MONROE COUNTIES, PENNSYLVANIA. and, consequently, the 29th of April the deedwas acknowledged to Smith, in whom the titleto the tract was invested for about a year. William Hamilton, of Bush Hill, Philadel-phia (nephew of .Tames), received a deed for theproperty from Smith on the 14th of April,1791, the consideration being nine hundred andfive dollars lawful money of Pennsylvania, whoheld it until his death, in 1813, after which Ja-son Torrey became the agent for the lands inWayne County belonging to his A—The Schoonovee Tract. B—The Indian Or-chard Tract. C—The United Tracts. Sunn after William Hamilton became pos-sessed of the property clearings began to bemade upon some of the adjoining tracts, andsettlers encroached upon his domain. Afterthe erection of Wayne County, in 1798, andespecially after the removal of the seat of justiceto Bethany, this tract of laud lying, as it did, near the county-seat, and along the main roadto it from the south, naturally appreciated con-siderably in value. At this time the better por- tions of it were in possession of half a dozen in-dividuals, either as squatters or under contractswith James Bell, Mr. Hamiltons agent and at-torney. Three years later Bells authority wasrevoked, and it became necessary tor the partiesholding under him to deal directly with theowner, which they did. On the 1st of .March,1810, deeds were acknowledged by WilliamHamilton for portions of the Indian Orchardt
