Railway and locomotive engineering : a practical journal of railway motive power and rolling stock . plied by compressed air, which is admitted to a cylinder by a veryingenious device, which is actuated bythe foot of the operator. Pressure is ap-plied until the tube and safe end are shafts, E, E, lie, a movement of the ring,M, away from the rollers, causes them tocome down on the mandrel, K, while anopposite motion of the ring forces therollers away from the mandrel. Themandrel is pinned in place and can beeasily removed when required. The method of attaching the lever tothe ring, M, is very simple. The ringhas a groove turned in it all round, andin this groove slide two studs, whichlatter are secured to the forked ends ofthe lever. The attachment resembles thegimbles, which support the familiarkerosene lamp, which is such a con-spicuous feature in torchlight proces-sions at election times. A treadle is arranged near where theoperator stands, and the pressure of thefoot upon this treadle opens an air valvewhich admits air behind the piston of asmall cylinder, and this moves the lever,. 1 Railway ^ Fig. 3 BYRDS FLUE WELDER. movement is spreading and it is highlyprobable that the other blocks in thisvicinity will adopt the same plan andthat finally the capitol will be encircledwith these celebrated little street lamps. brought down to the required work is done so neatly that it isnecessary to scrape ofT the scale in orderto discover the weld. Any size of tubemay be welded by simply changing themandrel and rollers. For cutting tubesthe rollers are taken ofl and disc cuttersput on instead. The machine as shown in our illustra-tion, consists of an upright stand, J,carrying a pulley, A, and gear necessaryto revolve the four rollers, F, F, aroundthe mandrel, K. The shafts, E,E, carryingthe rollers, F, are pivoted to a head, D,which revolves upon a hollow water-cooled center. These shafts pass at aslight angle through openings in thering, M, wh
