He was given charge of Hsia-pi (the modern Hsii GREAT NATIONAL HEROES 95 Chow, in Kiangsi Province) but during the defeat which LiuPei suflrered at the hands of Tsao Tsao, he was Tsao treated Kuan Yu with great consideration. Thiskindly treatment led Kuan Yii to assist Tsao Tsao when thelatter was attacked by Yiian Shao, and with his own hands heslew Yen Liang who was one of Yiian Shaos generals. Afterthis exhibition of his gratitude he sent a respectful letter toTsao Tsao resigning his position and again joined the standardof his sworn brother, Liu Pei.
