The stations of both of thesecompanies had been built, of course, to serve the needs ofseparate sections of independent track so that after theseveral lines had become united the first problem be-came that of the proper rearrangement of the power gen-eration for the most economical operation of the respectiveroads. This preliminary statement is necessary to a properunderstanding of the subsequent steps taken by the mana-gers of the two traction companies in altering their sys-tem of power production, one of the results of which hasbeen the adoption of storage batteries as station auxiliaries.
