Terra Nova Antarctic exploration. Expedition members hauling a sledge with a sail on 29 January 1912 during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the primary objectives were scientific, exploring the Ross Ice Shelf. Led by Robert Falcon Scott, a group of five reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912. The men seen here had been sent back earlier on 22 December 1911, led by officer and surgeon Edward Atkinson. They arrived back at the Cape Evans base camp, but attempts to resupply and rescue Scott's polar party ended in failure. The bodies of Scott and his remaining men were found in November 1912.
