A live oak tree is draped in Spanish moss at Shell Mound Park, April 12, 2019, in Dauphin Island, Alabama. The park is known for its six prehistoric Indian shell middens, which are mounds composed of discarded oyster shells. The shell middens date to the Mississippian period of Native American culture. Shell Mound Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also listed on the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail and a bird refuge for migratory birds. (Photo by Carmen K.
