False-colour arteriograph (angiograph) of the human head, showing the network of normal arteries that supply oxygenated blood to the brain. Angiography is the X-ray examination of an artery that has been outlined by the prior injection of a radio-opaque contrast medium. The technique is used to locate sections of diseased arteries, where the vessels have become blocked by fatty plaques (atheroma) or have ruptured due to hypertension (high blood pressure), resulting in an interruption or reduction in the blood supply to the brain. A sudden & severe attack (a stroke) may lead to paralysis & death.
