Photographer Mainak Halder INDIA ADORABLE little Bronze-winged jacana chicks were captured piggybacking on their father’s back during a heavy downpour in Purbasthali Bird Sanctuary, India. When the chicks are born, the male Jacanas take responsibility for looking after them until they are mature. During heavy rainfalls, the males hide the babies under their wings for protection and let them out once it subsides. The bronze-winged jacanas are found across South and Southeast Asia and forage on lilies and other floating aquatic vegetation. The long feet spread out their weight and prevent them from sinking. These images were snapped by a young Indian wildlife photographer, Mainak Halder (23), with his Nikon D7500 camera and Nikkor AF-S 200-500 mm lens. “I felt really wholesome after capturing these father-kids moments,” he said. “What I found most fascinating was the moment the chicks ran to their father and hid themselves under his wing. It’s a literal action of the father taking his kids under his wings. “I waited at my spot for around four to five hours for the predicted rain to fall so that I could witness this action that I had heard and read so much about. “It was my first time seeing it, and I felt really blessed when it happened.” ENDs
