A gutter known as a Bächle in German running with fresh water. These are a common sight

The city of Freiburg im Breisgau has a system of gutters known as bächle which channel fresh water down the cobbled streets and alleys. These were originally designed to supply water to the townspeople. They would also be useful in case of fire, an ever present danger in a town of wooden houses. In hot weather the bächle provide a gentle cooling of the air.
