Boat in oil slick. The brown colour of the oil comes from the detergent added to disperse it. The detergents used can be more harmful to wildlife than the original oil. This oil slick is from the Torrey Canyon, one of the first supertankers. It was wrecked off the Cornish coast of Britain in 1967, polluting 150 kilometres of coastline in the first of the big oil disasters.
