I. ; engaged in the produce commissionbusiness in the South, 1853-61; married Sarah of Proindence, R. I., in 1855; has beenlargely inferested in railroad management for manyyears, and has been president of the Rome, Watertown& Ogdensburg railroad since June, IRUSSell Sage, the famous finan-cier, born in Oneida county, NewYork, during James Madisons secondterm in the White House. Spendinghis early years on a farm and as anerrand boy in a country grocery, found scant time for mental cul-ture ; but he studied evenings, andotherwise acquired a fair education. Hischief successes, however, in early lifewere of a commercial nature; and hehad already become a capitalist in asmall way when he reached his majority,and established, in partnership with hisbrother, a grocery store at Iroy, N. buying out his brother, increasingthe business markedly, and selling thesame on advantageous terms, he formeda partnership with John W.
