Kiril Yankov, 33 charging the still with rose petals in Enio Bonchev Rose Distillery in Tarichane, Bulgaria. In Bulgaria during the early 1900's, virtually all rose oil was distilled on-site using direct-fire stills operated by the farmers. Distilling equipments for rose oil were imported from Persia and Tunisia. Over time, people came to employ double and then multiple distillations to rose water of better quality and of higher alcohol content. This unique innovation in the technology of rose oil production led Bulgarian rose oil to be prized by the top perfume makers in Paris.
