Vladimir Mikhailovich Bekhterev (1857-1927), Soviet neurophysiologist and psychiatrist. Bekhterev's discoveries included his description in 1900 of the role of the hippocampus in memory. He also described the severe form of spinal arthritis called ankylosing spondylitis, sometimes called Bekhterev's disease in his honour. His death followed a summons from Stalin to help him deal with a bout of depression. It has been speculated that Bekhterev was killed on Stalin's orders after diagnosing Stalin with paranoia.
