The station of New Galloway is about 6miles SSE of the town ; and a bus runs between themtwice a day. A sort of suburb of the burgh, in theform of a number of detached cottages, called the Mainsof Kenmure, lies scattered to the E between the town andthe bridge. Since then, however, the appearance of the houses and the socialcondition of the peojile have made considerable charter the corporation of the burgh was to comprisea provost, 4 bailies, dean of guild, treasurer, and 12councillors; but b}^ tlie sett, as rejiorted to and sanc-tioned l)y the convention of royal burghs on 15 July1708, the council was then declared to consist of 1 -o-vost, 2 bailies, a treasurer, and 15 councillo
