Softening,caries, or necrosis of the bone may occur, or abscess form. Symptoms.—The symptoms are: pain in the superior max-illa, usually severe and throbbing, lancinating or dull, andworse when leaning forward; swelling and tenderness mayappear over the affected region. The pain often extends to theteeth, or may originate in them, if they be the prime cause ofthe trouble, when there will be associated earache and muchredness and sponginess of the gums.
