He was graduated at Brown univer-sity in 1849, took the law course at Harvard, practiced at Worcester,and then in Boston. In April, 1861, he became captain in the 2ndMass. infantry; in 1862 major of the 33d Mass. infantry, and in April,1863, its colonel. He was engaged at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsvilleand Gettysburg, and at Lookout mountain received injuries which lefthim a cripple for life.
