Chapman's Butterwort (Pinguicula planifolia), seepage bog, Gulf coastal plain, Longleaf Pine ecosystem, SE USA, by Dembinsky Photo Assoc

Red Butterwort or Chapman's Butterwort Pinguicula planifolia Florida USA by Carol Dembinsky / Dembinsky Photo Associates This passive carnivorous plant traps occur around the world. Like all Butterwort species, the plant utilizes sticky gladular leaves to attract, trap ( like flypaper ), and eventually digest the insect to gain important nutrients that are unavailable in its native soil ( nitrogen and phosphorus). This particular species thrives in seepage bogs, and other wetlands of the coastal plains from Louisiana to Florida.
