UK, London, Twickenham, Radnor Gardens, 4th August, 2014. The Twickenham Branch of the Royal British Legion held a vigil to commemorate the declaration of war on the 4th August, 1914. An eternal flame was lit at 9am and burnt all day as a reminder of the hopes for a peaceful resolution. It was extinguished at 11pm - the exact time of the declaration of war 100 years ago. At 8pm the Mayor of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, Councillor Jane Boulton, and Her Serene Highness, Princess Marie-Therese von HohenBerg, Mrs Anthony Bailey, named the new commemorative gates to Radnor park, 'The Centenary Gates'. They then joined the Chaplain at the War Memorial for the lighting of Candles from the Eternal flame and the Commemoration service. The service was conducted by Padre David Loftus MBE. A rendition of the last post, the lowering of the Union Flag and the National Anthem marked the end of the vigil. Her Serene Highness, Princess Marie-Therese von HohenBerg, Mrs Anthony Bailey is the great granddaughter of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria–Hungary whose assassination in July 1914 led directly to World War 1.
