Callao, the sea-port of Lima, is about seven miles from the capital. Its harbor isbut little more than an open roadstead partially protected by anisland on the southwest side. However, since the winds and oceanswells are from the south, while the coast is practically never visitedby storms, this slight protection is sufficient.
