Alpine Scene in the Shoshone Country—Cody Road Climbing the Corkscrew—Cody Road The Pass is but a few feet across and soon SylvanLake is reached, and although at an elevation almostas great as the Pass, this mountain gem seems to nestleat the very foot of the lofty mountains which clusterabout it protectingly on all sides. It is a never-to-be-forgotten scene—the bright blue of the sky reflected inthe clear depths of the lake, the white snow splotchescontrasting with the varying greens of the forest slopes,over all the bright lights and shadows of the noondaysun and round about Natures quiet, never quite perfect,and in this case broken only by the murmur of the nearbytumbling cascades and mountain streams and the occa-sional note of a mountain songster. As the Lake Hotel has an altitude of 7,790 feet, thedescent of the western slope from the Pass is much moregradual than the ascent of the eastern slope, althoughequally picturesque.
