Down Tor stone circle, cairn, and stone row. East of Burrator reservoir, Dartmoor, Devon. Looking north east at circle, cairn & stone row.

Down Tor stone circle, cairn, and stone row. East of Burrator reservoir, Yelverton, Dartmoor, Devon. General view looking north east at circle and cairn with row and grazing cattle to rear. Avenue (Row 2) of 2 parallel stone rows circa. 1m apart climb south up a gentle slope to the Fourfold Circle (foreground), a stone circle or cairn of 4 concentric rings around a robbed cist (similar to Yellowmead), the outer ring circa. across encloses 3 smaller ones. The double row of small stones (some only 10cms high) rise in height as they approach the ring and end in 2 large stones: a wide flat topped block high and a slim pillar high. Both are fallen but Aubrey Burl says they would have formed a majestic portal to the ring and says their pairing is similar to ‘male’ and ‘female’ shaped stones in the West Kennet avenue at Avebury and other prehistoric sites. Fallen ‘male’ pillar has been used as a boundary stone, CP (Chagford Parish) carved on its upper face.
