Stephens-Black House, Historic Richmondtown, Staten Island, New York

The house was constructed around 1837 in Richmondtown, Staten Island. The east wing (to the right) was added in 1838. It was built as the residence of Stephen D. Stephens (1808–83). He operated the attached general store. He lived here with his wife, the former Elizabeth Johnson (1811–83), their five children and a domestic servant. The house was built on a lot laid out by Henry I. Seaman in 1836. The house was sold to Joseph (1817–76) and Mary Black in 1870. They lived here with their twelve children, a domestic servant and a store employee. They and their descendants operated the store and post office until 1926. It is an official New York City landmark.
