A street of weatherboarded buildings in Whitstable, Kent, England

There has been an inhabited site at Whitstable since the Palaeolithic era and its famous oysters have been collected since at least Roman times. The town is popular with tourists and has an annual Oyster Festival in July. The oyster industry is now thriving again after a period of decline, and a large number of seafood restaurants and pubs in the town provide freshly caught shellfish throughout the year.
