A new type of urban community for the 21st century is the ambition for New Islington. Next door to Ancoats and still only minutes away from Manchester city centre, New Islington is a visionary scheme to develop not just a place to live but a real and vibrant community. Developers Urban Splash, with a little help from maverick architect Will Alsop, have come up with a grand plan for this swathe of land between the Rochdale and Ashton Canals, aiming to turn it into a beacon of what a modern urban community should be - the ideal ‘favourite neighbourhood’. Work is well underway on plans that include new homes, a new primary school and health centre, a new eco park and a new city marina. The iconic Chips development has already become an architectural beacon for this part of the city, while the new marina opening in 2011.
