Kalahari landscape at dawn with springbok and blue wildebeest on grasslands. The animals are grazing in the dry Nossob river bed. This river only flowed twice during the twentieth century. Kalahari is an arid part of northwestern South Africa. Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis): Shoulder height about 75 cm; mean mass: males 41 kg, females 37 kg. Occurs on arid open grassland and semi-desert scrub, avoiding thick woodland, extensive areas of tall grass and rocky hills. Both sexes have lyrate horns, those of the males heavier than those of the females. Springbok both browse and graze and will drink where water is available but can subsist without it by obtaining their moisture from their food. They will dig for succulent roots in arid areas. They are most active in the morning and late afternoon, but they usually rest in the open during the hottest hours. Mating may take place at any time throughout the year. The main lamb crop is born during the summer in summer rainfall areas and in winter in winter rainfall areas. The gestation period is 24 weeks. The female hides her single newly born lamb in tall grass, where it remains for a day or two. Blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus): Larger than the black wildebeest. Shoulder height: males about m, females m; mass: males about 250 kg, females 180 kg. Occurs in open woodland where there is water, on which it is dependent, although in it's absence it will eat wild melons. There is a mane of long dark hair, which droops over the shoulders, along wisk of black hair on the tail, which nearly touches the ground and a fringe of long black hair down the middle of the throat. Both sexes have horns. They are grazers with a preference for feeding on short, lawn-like grassland.
