CHAPTEE X THE PYTHIAN, ISTHMIAN, AND NEMEAN FESTIVALS (1) The Pythia We have seen how in 582 the old local musical festivalwhich had been held at Delphi every eight years was trans-formed into a Panhellenic four-yearly festival with an athleticand equestrian programme copied from Olympia under thepresidency of the a-mphictyonic league. Delphi now becamea second centre of this league, which consisted originally of thetwelve tribes dwelling round the shrine of Demeter at Phylaeor Anthela. The league was administered by a councilcomposed of two representatives from each tribe, the Hieromne-mones, who met twice a year in spring and autumn at Phylaeand Delphi alternately.
