Night came on, and General Lane postedhis artillery on a hill near the city, andopened a heavy, well-aimed, and veryrapid fire. After firing for three quartersof an hour, the batteries of the enemywere silenced; and a portion of GeneralLane^s troops were ordered to advancecautiously into the town.
