In town affairs he took a lively interest. Hewas fond of company, very hospitable, and was,therefore, socially sought on account of his com-panionable qualities. Although he had at home beenreared in the Baptist Church, with which his paternalancestors had, for several generations, been promi-nently identified, he attended the CongregationalChurch, there being at that early period no church ofhis fathers persuasion in Machias.
