. The uncivilized races of men in all countries of the world; being a comprehensive account of their manners and customs, and of their physical, social, mental, moral and religious characteristics. By Rev. J. G. With new designs by Angas, Danby, Wolf, 1871. times of silver, and afew of the most precious minerals. The feet of the Chinese women are oftenmore strangely decorated than their vast number of the women have their feetcramped by bandages into a state whichrenders them little better than mere pegs on which to walk, or rather totter. It is notonly the rich who are thus deformed, but thepoorest often have their feet cramped. Theoperation is begun at a very early age, sothat the feet of the full-grown woman may notexceed in size that of a child of five or are bound firmly round the foot insuch a way as to force it into an archedshape, the heel being pressed forward andthe ball of the foot backward, while the fourmiddle toes are bent under the foot, and socompletely squeezed into its substance thatthey almost lose their identity. The gait of thewoman is necessarily reduced to an awk-ward waddle. There is no play of the beau-tiful machinery of the human foot, and thewearer of the golden lily walks exactlyas she would do if she had no feet at , her gait is even more awkward, in-asmuch as the weight of the body is thrownforward upon the great toe, than whichnothing can be imagined more opposed tothe rea
