An effigy of Guy Fawkes burns whilst the effigy of Manchester City footballer Mario Balotelli awaits a similar fate at bonfire night festivities, Edenbridge, Kent, UK. 5th November 2011. Photo: Graham M. Lawrence.
The failed ‘Gunpowder Plot’ by Guy Fawkes in 1605 to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London is commemorated annually in the United Kingdom on the 5th November. In the small town of Edenbridge, Kent, UK, members of the Bonfire Society build a different ‘Celebrity Effigy’ each year to be burnt together with the effigy of Guy Fawkes. Previous choices have included Tony Blair, Katy Price, Saddam Hussain and Jonathon Ross. This year Manchester City footballer, striker Mario Balotelli, has been chosen because his house nearly burnt down after a friend set off some fireworks in his bathroom.
