Second Afternoon. 259—Famiixe Verte Dai-mi: on Toad (Ming) Figaro of the Buddhist Apostle with hands folded underpobea and flowing covering on head, standing with barefeet on an enormous three-legged spotted toad. The model-ing of this exceptional piece is sculptural in boldness yetdlicate in detail: features of the holy man are perfect;edges of robes are incised. The monster toad is vigorouslyshaped with staring eyes and mouth open at side*. Thefigure is separately fixed by a copper plate to back oftoad. Covered with the brilliant enamels of the famiUc vcrtcclass, green being used for body of toad, exceptunder mouth, which is white, and head covering of saint;blue for robes of an unusually large area and originallyunder a thin green glaze so now showing a subdued softcolor, aubergine only used for face and feet.
