Blinded Sphinx (Paonias excaetus) 4th instar larva on Wild Cherry (Prunus serontina) This species can exhibit a wide variation in pattern and coloration. Sphinx caterpillars can feed and rest in any orientation but more often than not they are found hanging upside down. This species feeds on an incredible number of different species of trees and shrubs. Often it develops local preferences. This transcontinental species is found throughout the eastern US and Canada west to the rockies and Arizona. This larva was photographed in Pennsylvania in late summer.
