This illustration dates to the 1890s and shows the altar frieze at Pergamon (also Pergamum). Here we see Zeus fighting the Titans in the battle known as the Gigantomachy. He is fighting three of the giants/Titans with eagles and lightning bolts. This grouping was part of the altar frieze at Pergamon. Pergamon was an ancient city in Asia Minor ( present-day Turkey). The altar at Pergamon (also spelled Pergamum) was built in the second half of the second century The ruler at that time was Eumenes II. Tondeur is credited with the restoration.
