The streets arenarrow, and the houses are built of stone with flatroofs, surmounted by domes. The manufactories ofglass are in the narrow, dark lanes near the northpart of the city. The principal articles made arelamps, and rings of colored glass, the latter worn bywomen on their arms and fingers as crates of these articles may be seen standingin the streets ready to be loaded on camels for trans-portation to Egypt and various parts of Palestine. The environs of the city are very fertile, fm-nish-ing the finest vineyards in Palestine ; also numerousplantations of olive-trees, and excellent pasturage. The population is now about 5,000, and the inhabi-tants are the wildest, most lawless, and desperatepe
