Previous to thishe had already ingratiated himself with the Government by con-stituting himself the poet-laureate of the Protectorate, but as hispoems remained mostly unpublished at the Restoration, he somehowescaped all penalty for his republican principles and his strongattachment to Cromwell. As member for Hull, he played a modestpart in politics and was able to shield Milton from persecution, buthis chief sphere of activity and his chief source of influence lay inpolitical satire.
