Predicted polar ozone loss. Forecast decrease in the amounts of ozone in the ozone layer in the polar regions between 2010 and 2019. The ozone distribution maps show percentage losses (left) and absolute losses (Dobson Units, right) in the Antarctic (top) and the Arctic (bottom). This forecast was made with a model based on data from the THESEO project (Third European Stratospheric Experiment on Ozone, 1999-2000). The prediction is that ozone loss will peak during this period and then start to recover. Ozone levels declined due to destruction by long-lived chlorinated gases released by human activities. These gases were banned by the Montreal Protocol of 1987.
