Snowy owl and chicks, 19th-century artwork. The snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) is also known as the harfang, and is found in the northern circumpolar region. Here, one of the parents, both of whom care for the chicks, has caught a prey animal (a small mammal) and brought it back to the nest to feed them. Breeding takes place in May, and the nest consists of a scrape on a mound or boulder. Artwork from the 19th volume (first period of 1897) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
