Media City in Salford, which is home to the BBC, is set to double in size over the next decade after plans were submitted to the local council for £1bn of new development. Up to 10 new buildings are planned for the site, including offices, 1,800 flats and retail space, which will be built by 2026. The existing scheme, which was developed as a joint venture between property company Peel Land and Property and Legal & General Capital, is already home to 250 businesses. The BBC moved many of its London-based staff to the site in 2011, in a controversial relocation costing an estimated £877m. Other companies, such as Ericsson and SIS, also have offices at Media City. ITV moved some of its studios to the site in 2013. Steven Underwood, chief executive of The Peel Group, said the scheme was the UK’s fastest growing hub for the creative and digital industries. “Media City UK is a shining example of what can be achieved across the Northern Powerhouse, combining the talents of great people with ambition and vision,” he said. Media City is built on land formerly occupied by the Port of Manchester and Manchester Docks.
