He joined Eagle Engine No. 13, of which the well-known fireman,John Baulch, was foreman, but his first service in the company only covereda period of four months, when, on account of some internal discord, heresigned, and immediately joined Fulton Engine Company No. 21, servinguntil the early part of 1852, when he rejoined No. 13. He was elected assistantforeman iu 1852, and foreman in 1853-54-55. In 185T, when Harry Howardwas elected chief engineer,.causing a vacancy in the B oard of Engineers, itwas tilled by the election of Mr. Donovan. His attention to rules so pleasedthe department that at two subsequent elections he was re-elected, leading allother candidates. In 1S60 Chief Decker appointed Mr. Donovan foreman of. OUR FIB E M E N. the Corporation Yard—an office which he held until the time of his death,which occurred in August, 1k, and joinedStar Hose Compain No. 34, 1 heii located at Tenth St reel and Avenue D, onAugust 184!i, and served seven months, when he resigned and joined LiveOak Engine Company No. 44. Hie remained with No. 44 until September 29,1 *(;.>, and during his service was foreman for one year and representative fatthree years. < )n the date last mentioned the Volunteer Department went outof existence, and the same day Mr. Landers became a member of the Metro-politan Fire Department. He was made assistant captain November 15, 1HTJ5,and captain of Engine Company December .4. ls]. He is at presentcaptain of Engine Company No. 42, located in Fulton Avenue, between OneHundred and Sixty-Seventh and One Hundred and Sixty-eighth Streets (Mor-risania). Mr. Landerss
