Daniel Defoe (1660–1731), born Daniel Foe, was an English trader, pamphleteer, spy, journalist and writer most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe. After the death of William III in 1702 he was replaced by Queen Anne who immediately began an offensive against Nonconformists. Defoe was a natural target, and his pamphleteering and political activities resulted in his arrest principally on account of a pamphlet in which he ruthlessly satirised the High church. He was charged with seditious libel, found guilty and sentenced to public humiliation in a pillory.

Daniel Defoe (1660–1731), born Daniel Foe, was an English trader, pamphleteer, spy, journalist and writer most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe. When the death of William III in 1702 created political upheaval, the king was replaced by Queen Anne who immediately began an offensive against Nonconformists. Defoe was a natural target, and his pamphleteering and political activities resulted in his arrest principally on account of a pamphlet in which he ruthlessly satirised the High church. He was charged with seditious libel, found guilty after a trial at the Old Bailey and sentenced to a fine of 200 marks, to public humiliation in a pillory, and to an indeterminate length of imprisonment which would only end upon the discharge of the punitive fine. According to legend, his audience at the pillory threw flowers instead of the customary harmful and noxious objects.
