The detritus entering the puncta is partlypressed and partly floated along the canaliculi until it reaches thelachrymal sac. 350 ANATOMY (GROSS) OF THE HUMAN EYE The lachrymal apparatus may be divided iuto a secretory and anexcretory portion. The former includes not only the lachrymalglands, but the mucous glands of the conjunctiva. As a matter offact, the moisture that commonly cleanses the ocular and conjuncti-val surfaces is contributed by the mucous follicles of the conjunctiva, while more copious supplies of tears are furnished by the lachrymalgland. The latter is of the salivary variety, of a reddish-gray color, and consists of an upper and lower lobe, incompletely separatedfrom each other by the anterior tendinous expansion of the levatorpalpebrge superioris. The upper lobe is larger, and more compactthan the lower; it is oval in shape, and measures about 20 to 25 Lachrymal Apparatus. in length, and 12 to 14 mm. in thickness. The gland is situated in adepression beneath the external angular process of the frontal bone;its upper surface, which is convex, lies close to the periosteum ofthe orbit, to which it is attached by loose connective tissue; the undersurface rests upon the eyeball at the superior fornix toward theexternal canthus. This gland secrets a slightly alkaline fluid con-taining much sodic chloride, which is sprayed onto the globethrough a fan-shaped array of from seven to twelve ducts openingat the outer aspect of the superior fornix. The blood supply of the lachrymal gland is from the lachrymalbranch of the ophthalmic artery. The sensory nerve supply to the lachrymal apparatus is from thelachrymal branch of the ophthalmic or first division of the fifth;the secretory function of the gland is regulated by the
