Parqueet. Rainbow Lory Trichoglossus haematodus Indonesia, Australia Rainbow lories make excellent pets and are a bit clownish. The Rainbow lory is considered to be an interactive bird, although some can be nippy as they age. Rainbow lories are active and feisty and fearlessly go after any challenge that faces them. Rainbow lories have a tendency to be vocal and scream, but they are less nippy than other species of lories. Rainbow lories can also be extremely territorial, sometimes protecting their status in the flock to the death. All lories are susceptible to hemochromatosis (iron storage disease) and visceral gout. Rainbow lory birds require a low-protein and low-iron diets that consist largely of fruit and nectar. Rainbow lories do not usually eat seed and most breeders do not recommend giving rainbow lories a pellet diet. Opt for fresh fruits, vegetable and sprouts instead. n the wild, lories use their specialized brush-like tongues to feed on nectar, pollen, flowers and fruits (and occasional insect). They diet must be similar at home, with a commercially prepared lory diet, nectar, fruits and vegetables. Due to the sugar and water consistence of their food, their droppings are very similar. Prepare for a sticky mess! The term Grass Parakeet (or Grasskeet) refers to a large number of small Australian parakeets native to grasslands such as Neophema and Princess Parrot. Many of the smaller, long-tailed species of lories may be referred to as lorikeets. The term Ringnecked Parakeet refers to a species of the Psittacula genus native to Africa and Asia that is popular as a pet and has become feral in many cities. It should not be confused with the Australian Ringneck. Some species, especially the larger parakeets, may be referred to as "parrot" or "parakeet" interchangeably. For example, Alexandrine Parrot and Alexandrine Parakeet are different names for the same species, (Psittacula eupatria), one of the largest species called a parakeet.
